The term spa is traditionally used to mean a place where water that is believed to have special health-giving properties occurs. This is usually a mineral or hot spring, and can include cold water treatments. The term is derived from the Belgian town of Spa.

A destination spa or resort spa is a Business establishment which people visit for personal care treatments such as massages and facials in a hotel setting. Destination spas are often in exotic locations or in spa towns. Destination spas offer similar services to a beauty salon or a day spa, but people reside at a destination spa instead of just visiting for a treatment. Resort spas are generally located in resorts.

Today’s spa is a center for healing and nourishing mind, body, and spirit. People go to spas for fitness, stress management, peace of mind, pampering and pleasure, and health and wellness. Spas offer a wide variety of techniques and services – traditional and modern, from the East and from the West – to meet the diverse needs of their clients: Swedish, Japanese Shiatsu, and Thai massage, European facials, acupuncture, Dead Sea salt scrubs, Moor mud wraps, aromatherapy, reflexology, reiki, aura imaging, hypnotherapy, classes in nutrition, meditation, journaling, yoga and Tai Chi, state-of-the-art fitness centers with personal trainers, and much more. Other types of spas include day spas, club spas, cruise ship spas, medical spas, and mineral spring spas.

Not every spa includes every domain. Spas come in many shapes, sizes, and focuses – from day spas where you can get a single treatment to destination spas where you can stay for a week or more to medical spas that treat cosmetic and chronic Health problems.

For well over a decade now, it’s become increasingly clear that hotel and resort spas are here to stay! Properties that added a spa or upgraded their existing spa have benefited enormously. Increasingly, the savvy, health-conscious guest will choose to spend time at a property where spa services are offered. Since prestige levels, as well as occupancy levels, are elevated, staffing these spas with top-quality personnel will continue to be a priority for these hotels and resorts.

In order to become a spa therapist you need to have a unique combination of skills and require a great deal of training. You will also have to possess an almost unrivalled ability in a vast array of skills. You will have to be an excellent communicator not only with your friends and the people you know well, but with people from every age group, social background, ethnic origin, occupation and gender.

You will need to have a high degree of physical stamina due to the nature of the work and long working hours
You will have to learn basic rules of chemistry, physics, human anatomy, physiology and mathematics
You should be highly dextrous
Your personality should be vibrant, sparkling, strong and interesting
You should be diplomatic, sympathetic and have the ability to listen and communicate well
You will have to be prepared to undertake a long initial training and then to continue training for the rest of your working life.

To find all these qualities in a single individual is very difficult. That is why good spa therapists are rare and rare skills should be rewarded. The pay while training may be low, but it is often enhanced with tips and gratuities from clients and will be increased further by commission earned through selling retail products to clients. Spa therapists in top spas and those who progress to supervisory or management positions will earn even more.

Spa Directors
A Spa Director at a top-quality resort or hotel will oversee many areas, such as staffing, training, product purchasing, merchandising, setting up a strong retail outlet, budgeting and forecasting. He or she may be asked to help market the spa and be knowledgeable about Internet advertising and have Public Relations’ contacts. Spa Directors are often asked to help design new or additional spa areas and see the project through to opening. A seasoned Spa Director with a broad range of experience may be compensated in the $70-125K range.

A Spa Director just starting out at a small to mid-sized spa will, of course, not be offered as high a salary. The general salary range for this Director will typically be in the $50-65K range. All candidates must have a high level of operational experience and several certifications, including CPR and First Aid. The letters in CPR stand for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, a combination of rescue breathing (mouth-to-mouth resuscitation) and chest compressions. If a man isn’t breathing or circulating blood adequately, CPR can restore circulation of oxygen-rich blood to the brain. Without oxygen, permanent brain damage or death can occur in less than 8 minutes.

Assistant Spa Directors/ Spa Operations Managers
Salary range is generally $40-65K, dependent on the factors cited above and location, cost of living, etc. Candidates must have previous experience in a spa setting.

Taking a CPR Course
Qualified instructors use videos, printed materials, and demonstrations on mannequins representing infants, children, and adults to teach proper techniques for performing CPR. The American Heart Association’s basic life support course that includes CPR lasts about 6 hours and is sometimes held in two separate sessions. The courses teach CPR procedures for infants (under 1 year old), children (1 to 8 years old), and adults.

Participants practice the techniques on mannequins and have opportunities to ask questions and get individualized instruction. The final test for the course is a combination of demonstrating CPR skills and taking a written test.

Once considered to be a luxury, the services offered by spa therapists are enjoyed by an ever-increasing number of people. Spa facilities range from day spas, to spas in hotels and holiday resorts, some of which are in exotic locations.

If you’re looking into this area of interest there are many different professions that will be and are available. Because of the vast variety of existing opportunities, it will also accommodate a number of different degrees and different types of training. Certain jobs in communications, community outreach, sales, marketing and Business support are available in every renewable energy field. In addition, each field will need construction workers for building of the facilities, architects for the building design, mechanical and electrical engineers for research and development and technicians to maintain operations of the buildings. It will also create a number of direct and indirect jobs in rural communities. There will be an increase in jobs for farmers and foresters to produce and collect biomass resources. There will also be a need for more truck drivers to transport resources to the plants. There may even be a need for chemical engineers cross-trained in engineering and biology or chemistry and agriculture.

Geothermal energy production requires geologists, geochemists, geophysicists, hydrologists, seismologists, reservoir engineers, mud loggers, hydraulic engineers and drillers for the development and location of reservoirs. Environmental scientists will be needed for impact studies and for the obtainment of permits. HVAC contractors and drilling crews are also needed for manufacturing and installing geothermal heat pumps. Direct use of geothermal technology will have a need for heating engineers and those trained in building and agricultural industries. Electrical machinists, welders, riggers and mechanics are also needed in the design and construction processes.

Hydropower industry will employ recreation planners, resource managers and educators in managing the reservoirs and surrounding lands. The employment of environmental scientists such as, biologists, hydrologists, ecologists, and wildlife habitat specialists will be needed for conducting impact studies. They are needed to examine the effect hydropower has on the environment, to deal with environmental safety and to satisfy state and federal licensing laws.

The renewable energy field offers careers for individuals with a number of different skills, degrees and training. By being among those who will apply their talents and areas of expertise to any of the renewable energy fields, you can help the United States in its quest to provide an safe, environmentally friendly energy to its citizens.

In the United States, a PA, or a Physician’s Assistant, is a non-physician therapist, who is licensed to practice medicine under the supervision of a physician. In many cases, this supervision does not have to be direct and many Physician’s Assistants practice in distant and remote locations like satellite clinics.

Physician Assistants prescribe medicine and treat patients and in some places in the United States, they are given a DEA number that gives them the power to prescribe specific controlled medicines, such as narcotics. In surgical procedures, Physician Assistants act as first assists during a surgery. They also offer medical services, which are compensated by a third party insurance company or by Medicare.

How They Fare

In the year 2005, PA’s held around 64,000 jobs. The number of jobs available is greater in proportion with the number of practicing Physician Assistants, since some PA’s hold more than two jobs. For instance, many Physician Assistants work under a supervising physician and they also work in other clinics, hospitals or practice independently. According to the AAPA or the American Academy of Physician Assistants, in January 2006, there were almost 60,000 certified Physician Assistants practicing in clinics.

In 2005, over 50% of Physician Assistants were found to work in clinics and offices of physicians, either in osteopathic or allopathic practice. Almost 40% were hired by hospitals and the remaining few were engaged in nursing Homes, prisons, The United States Department of Veterans Affairs, public health clinics, schools and home health care agencies. In addition, the AAPA states that almost 20% of all the Physician Assistants were found to provide Health care to many rural communities.

Accredited Programs

In 2006, almost 150 accredited Physician Assistants Programs exist. One governing body, the ARC-PA or the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, accredits all these programs. Most of these programs are Master’s Degree programs, however, a few of them do provide undergraduate majors and graduate level training.

One governing body, the NCCPA or the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, grants the certification of a Physician Assistant.

Other Innovative Medical Careers

Physician Assistants and the Nurse Practitioners provide similar services. The only dissimilarity would be that Nurse Practitioners are registered nurses and have to undergo extensive training, more than the PA’s, and they have to obtain a Master’s Degree in nursing. They are also known as APC’s or Advanced Practice Clinicians or MLP’s or Mid-Level Practitioners.

Medical Assistants perform routine clerical and clinical tasks at any physician’s clinic. A Medical Assistant is a multifaceted healthcare practitioner, who is capable of performing a variety of laboratory and clinical procedures, along with certain administrative responsibilities. They are multi-skilled and versatile professionals. Their formal education takes place in community colleges, junior colleges, vocational or technical institutes or proprietary schools. The curriculum has to be accredited, if graduates plan on getting registered or certified. Accreditation requires that the school curriculum should offer classroom lectures and well equipped laboratories.

Today, many of the health care placements focus on healthcare services and almost 15% of all healthcare jobs available have increased. The factors that contribute towards the growth of jobs in this industry include the growing and aging population that demands additional medical services and of course the use of innovative medical technology for treatment and intensive diagnosis.
