Gardening Tips For Beginners- 8 Useful Tips For The Novice

As a hobby, gardening can be an absolute delight! While the task of creating an outdoor garden is rather an arduous one, the end result is enough to make you forget all your pain and labor! But if you are still skeptical about whether you are capable of taking up this activity or not, take heart from these gardening tips for beginners–

(1) Since it is the first time for you, plan a small garden at first, but envision a larger one in future. As a matter of fact, plenty of plants can be accommodated even in an area measuring just 80 to 100 square feet!

(2) As suggested in the gardening tips for beginners, it is easier to take care of a smaller garden, giving you enough time to get acquainted with the basics of Gardening such as–how much water is required approximately, knowledge about fertilizers, keeping growth of weeds under control, keeping away pests and diseases.

(3) As a novice, you are eager to see how you have made out! So it just will not do for you to begin a long-term gardening project which could stretch over many weeks or many months. The waiting becomes intolerable!

(4) The small garden equips you with the necessary skills and creativity to create a better-designed and much larger garden the next time, since you are feeling much more confident by this time. Or you could think of ways to expand your present garden.

(5) But despite what gardening tips for beginners advises, if you still desire to start off with a large project, separate it into different segments. You can then work on one section at a time. Not only can you observe what you have achieved, but also improve on your efforts when proceeding to the next section.

(6) There are all sorts of gardeners. Some go after every weed, refusing to give it a place in their beautiful gardens! Some hate the thought of constant weeding and keep wishing that they could just spend time watching the plants grow and flower!

There is a way to prevent too many weeds from coming up, and that is by using mulch. Since weeding can be quite taxing on the hands and knees, put down a layer of regular mulch or organic mulch (2 to 3 inches thick) on the soil! The appearance is neat. Also, mulch helps in maintaining the soil temperature and moisture. Most important of all, weeds do not have the liberty to grow out of control!

(7) The soil should get enough water for the seeds to germinate and allow roots to go deeper. Plant roots (grasses generally) tend to remain nearer the surface if there is frequent watering because the actual amount of water taken is less. Gardening tips for beginners counsels that you take a larger quantity of water, but water less frequently.

(8) Plants should be watered in the early morning hours, as suggested by gardening tips for beginners. The leaves can dry off during the rest of the day. Thus, fungal diseases are kept away.

These are just a few gardening tips for beginners; there are many more! Follow the advice given, and observe how much beauty you can create even in a small piece of land! The magnificent vista that emerges from your labor of love can leave you with feelings of awe and wonder! Additionally, all that physical exercise in the fresh air contributes to a far Healthier you and a great appearance!

Indoor Organic Gardening- 3 Major Aspects Of Indoor Organic Gardening!

No doubt modern techniques in agriculture have given us much, but at what cost? People are slowly realizing that chemicals and commercialization are neither benefitting plants nor humans, and are therefore seeking alternative modes of gardening–more environmental-friendly in nature. Going “organic” is the only solution–either outdoors or indoors. People living in flats and apartments can go in for indoor organic gardening.

There are three major aspects to indoor organic gardening–

(1) What is indoor organic gardening or holistic gardening? This garden is created inside a building. Whatever context it is taken in, its main theme remains the same–use only “natural” materials to grow plants.

Among the various types of indoor organic gardening, the most popular ones are hydroponics (cultivation of plants in nutrient solutions and not in soil) and vegan gardening (only kitchen waste to be used as compost, not animal refuse).

(2) Why is indoor organic Gardening preferable to indoor conventional gardening?

There are four reasons for advocating this type of gardening–

(a) People are generally worried about Finances! Well, an organic garden brings down costs, for the simple reason that money need no longer be spent on purchasing vegetables and fruits from the market or chemical fertilizers.

(b) Kitchen wastes and other organic wastes (anything which proves useful to the plant) in the house come in useful as compost (natural fertilizer).

(c) Since no synthetic materials are used, it follows that consumed foods are far Healthier and better in taste. When treated with chemical fertilizers, some of the material gets deposited into the vegetables.

(d) Very little soil is required (sometimes, no soil at all). Neither the soil nor water get to retain chemical residues as no chemicals are used. Thus, the environment is safe.

(3) What are the relevant features of indoor organic gardening?

(a) Anything can be cultivated–simple houseplants, specific herbs, fruits or vegetables.

(b) There are two options available for indoor organic gardening–purchasing readymade gardening kits from brick and mortar gardening stores or online shops, or doing everything from the beginning.

A novice or someone rushed for time better plant seedlings, as the process of transplanting and/or spacing of new plants need not be attempted then.

(c) As the plants are being grown indoors, lighting should be adequate to enable them to prepare food. If the plants cannot get sufficient amount of sunlight, then the gardener can search for alternative sources of lighting.

(d) Regarding temperature and humidity, they should complement each other. In an outside environment, nature does the regulation, but the same is not the case indoors. A humidifier should do the trick since it controls the humidity level and keeps it constant.

(e) As for all plants, the amount of water for each houseplant should be proportionate to its needs. There should be no under-watering or over-watering.

Gardening – What are the Benefits?

Gardening is one of the simplest and most fruitful, pun intended, hobbies in the country. Even those in the urban areas are rapidly discovering the wonders of this activity. So although they don’t have the garden patch on their backyard that they can show off, they make one several feet above the ground in their condominium units and apartment buildings.

Gardening, after all, does not only involve a large patch of land. One can actually do gardening in pots. Even taking care of orchids and other aerial plants are also considered gardening. Starting small is actually quirt good especially if you do not have much experience yet. Not all people have a green thumb and it is best to take care of only a few so that you will be able to fully focus on each of the plants.

Remember that gardening may look as simple as watering them every morning and putting fertilizers, but the task is more than that. It actually involves a lot of work and can take a great deal of time especially if you have many plants to take care of.

Most people think that gardening is only for aesthetic purposes but the fact is, there are a lot of things that Gardening can offer, not only to people but also to the environment. Below are just some of the benefits that one can get from gardening. Read on and you might be encouraged to get on with the craze.

Relaxation

Although it may indeed involve a lot of work, from watering the plants to cutting the unwanted shrubs in the surrounding areas, gardening relaxes people. This is especially true with people who are already used to the task and are simply enjoying the “flowers” of their labor.

Gardening, in fact, has been known to be effective therapy with people who are depressed or those with manic tendencies. Plants soothes the emotions and calms the person.

Clean air

Science books have told us that plants inhale carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen, an air that we need to survive. When there are plants in the house, the air is healthier as plants already filter the air when they make food and then give off clean air. This is the reason why people find cleaner air in the suburbs compared to the cities… perhaps because there are more trees there than in the rustle-bustle of urban areas.

Cooler

The home with plants is also cooler than those that do not have any. This is because of the shades that plants provide. The branches and the leaves of the plants protect the house from the direct rays of the sun and of course the leaves in itself absorb the sunlight. Plants need the sunlight to make or process their own food.

Eye-appealing

Hands down, a house with plants and flowers is more beautiful than any house with great architectural design. Having plants at home provides flashes of colors that are wonderful to look at especially when combined with the general design of the house. Especially good in providing aesthetic appeal are orchids and sunflowers which provide a cheery and bright atmosphere to any Home.

Food on the table

You can actually choose to plant vegetables that you and your family can enjoy at the dining table. This actually beats having to buy veggies in the market because you know that what you have planted is clean and free from pesticides and other chemicals that are used in commercial planting.
